An Anthology The Undershade

Discover self that has been shrouded.

What is The Undershade?

What grows
in the dark.

The Undershade is the debut anthology of 4thWall Collective— set in South Africa, exploring breaking social paradigms and the continual work of becoming. Through fragmented structures and surreal aesthetics, it brings together perspectives on self-discovery in post-colonial South Africa. Aimed at semi-urban/urban South Africans aged 18-25 years old who are still figuring things out, The Undershade positions itself as a continued struggle for belonging, remembrance, and recognition in a post-apartheid South Africa, responding to ongoing efforts to discover one’s position, history, and freedom.

"Four young voices have gathered to whistle the hurt and beauty of a country's generation. Each offering is a distinct note that shatters our collective fourth wall, and pokes elegantly into the malice our history has too far denied. This anthology is an audacity that is unreserved and, quite frankly, overdue." - ARC reader

The Anthology

Voices from
beneath the surface.

"a powerful blend of folklore, magical realism, and social commentary"
Mandulo
Raised deep within the forest after being abandoned at birth, Mandulo’s quiet existence begins to unravel when strange visions and unnatural changes force her toward the truth about who she is and the people who abandoned her.
"ambitious and highly experimental dreamlike narrative"
Phantasmagoria
On the eve of a historic provincial election, first-time voters are offered something no political party has ever promised before: therapy. As generational pressure, inherited trauma, and the fear of disappointing their families begin to consume them, one young citizen is called to confront an impossible choice—carry the weight of the past into the ballot box, or step into a ever shifting room that may finally allow them to heal.
"a darkly comic and unsettling vision of bureaucratic life"
AFTER HOURS
Restless, disillusioned Velile navigates the absurd corridors of LIIVEN Corp, where eccentric upper management, endless escalators, and impossible workplace rituals slowly unravel the identity she has built around belonging.
"strikingly original and politically charged"
Soft Backs Where Wolves Once Stood
STUDENT 10841996, a compliant, detached girl, buries the story of her classmate's fatal death beneath procedure and fear, until a single exam question cracks her open. Fragments of poetry invade white spaces between equations, dragging buried memory onto the surface forcing her to confront a sinister violence that stretches from colonial past into her classroom.

About the Collective

4thWall
Collective

We are a collective of writers that peer through the veil, breaking the fourth wall between audience and story, inviting readers to confront themselves, their world, and the truths hidden beneath it. Our work explores humanity's deepest hopes, fears, and desires, while pushing beyond the borders of collective consciousness.

As we begin to show you who we are and what we can do, we invite you to witness the clash and conviction of everyday journeys, and find your place among the pages.
